Senedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Bill – Bill Summary

Published 11/10/2023   |   Reading Time minutes

The Senedd could be on the verge of its biggest shake-up since it was established in 1999 if the Senedd Cymru (Members and Elections) Bill becomes law.

The Bill would see the number of Members of the Senedd increase to 96, as well as change the way they are elected.

Under the Bill’s proposals, the Senedd would return to four-year terms and the maximum number of Deputy Presiding Officers and Welsh Ministers would increase.

The Bill would also introduce boundary reviews for Senedd constituencies and would make it a requirement for candidates standing for election to the Senedd, and Members of the Senedd, to be registered to vote at an address in Wales.

This Bill Summary provides an overview of the provisions in the Bill, and signposts to where further information can be found.
