The Minister for Health and Social Services has said that “the ongoing building of our infrastructure” is “absolutely critical” to delivering the Welsh Government’s vaccination strategy.
This article sets out the infrastructure for rolling out vaccines in each of Wales’ seven local health boards. It was updated on 27 January.

The vaccination strategy
The Welsh Government’s vaccination strategy sets out a “blended model” of vaccine delivery, with a mix of mass vaccination centres, GP practices, and community vaccination centres. Vaccines will also continue to be administered by mobile units and on hospital wards.
On 19 January, the Minister explained that there were 28 mass vaccination centres operating at different capacities, with 17 more planned, giving a total of 45. The Welsh Government also expected 250 GP surgeries across Wales to be participating in the rollout by the end of January. Furthermore, a community pharmacy pilot scheme had also started in north Wales.
The Minister updated the Senedd on 26 January, explaining that there were now 329 GP practices involved in the vaccine rollout, and that three clusters of GP practices had participated in a pilot to administer the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine (two in north Wales, one in the Cwm Taf health board area).
How each health board is delivering the vaccine
This section brings together the vaccine delivery infrastructure set out by each of the seven health boards in Wales on their websites. It was updated on 27 January 2021.
Differences between Welsh Government and local health board information
A Welsh Government list and map shows the locations of current and intended vaccination centres.
But there are some differences between the Welsh Government’s list of vaccine centres, and the lists of centres the health boards have put on their websites.
For example, Hywel Dda University Health Board’s intention to open a vaccination centre in Llanelli is not on the Welsh Government map or list. No health board at the time of updating this article mentioned opening or planning to open centres at Aberfan, Abertillery, Pontypridd or Llantrisant (which are all on the Welsh Government’s list) and only one centre is mentioned for Newport rather than two. It is also not clear if some or all of the hospital vaccination centres some health boards are operating are included in the Welsh Government’s list.
There are also differences in the terminology the Welsh Government uses to describe vaccination centres, and the terminology being used by health boards. The Welsh Government uses the term “vaccination centres” and “community vaccination centres”, but the health boards use a mixture of terms to describe them such as “mass vaccination centres”, “local vaccination centres” and “hospital vaccination centres”. This section uses the terminology that each health board uses to describe their centres .
- Three hospital vaccination centres at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Ysbyty Wrecsam Maelor (these are now temporarily closed and will reopen by the first week of March for frontline staff to begin receiving their second doses);
- Three mass vaccination centres at the Ysbyty Enfys sites at Bangor, Llandudno, Deeside;
- All 98 GP practices in the health board area are part of the rollout, with all delivering vaccines from the week commencing 18 January depending on vaccine supply. Two clusters of GP practices participated in a Pfizer administration pilot over the weekend of 23-24 January; and
- 17 local vaccination centres at these locations, which will be opened later in the delivery phase. As of 27 January, one local vaccination centre, the Catrin Finch Centre in Wrexham, has opened.

- The health board explains that it is vaccinating in four settings:
- An undisclosed number of hospital vaccination centres for frontline staff;
- Care homes, using an undisclosed number of mobile teams;
- All 51 GP practices in the Health Board area, with three practices in one GP cluster participating in a pilot to administer the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine; and
- Four community vaccination centres in Bridgend, Ystrad, Abercynon, and Merthyr Tydfil
