On 16 July, the UK Government launched a four-week consultation on its proposals for a new law to govern the UK’s internal market. We published a research briefing looking at the proposals on 3 August.
The proposals proved contentious and prompted swift responses from the Welsh Government, the Scottish Government, and committees at the Senedd, the Scottish Parliament and Westminster.
The Senedd’s Legislation, Justice and Constitution Committee called the length of the consultation period ‘wholly inadequate’ and said the proposals could have ‘profound constitutional implications’. Meanwhile, the External Affairs and Additional Legislation Committee said it was unable to respond to the consultation without further information from the UK Government and stressed that legislation should not be ‘imposed by the UK Government or Parliament against the will of the other governments and legislatures’.
Our updated paper (PDF, 1989KB) looks at the responses of the governments and parliaments of the UK and their key themes. The UK Government is expected to introduce a Bill to implement the proposals early this autumn term.
