Article by Gregg Jones, Head of EU Office, National Assembly for Wales

The latest issue of Europe Matters, the regular update on the EU and international activities of the National Assembly for Wales, is published today. This is particularly pertinent given that today is Europe Day and given the forthcoming European Parliament elections that will take place across the EU from 22-25 May. Wales will, of course, elect four new Welsh MEPs to represent our interests in the EU’s directly elected legislature, and the relationship between the Assembly and the Welsh MEPs, and the European Parliament more generally, is considered particularly important. Europe Matters provides details of the recent and ongoing work of Assembly Committees on EU affairs, for example the inquiry by Enterprise and Business Committee into EU Funding Opportunities for 2014-2020, due to report later this term, and Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee’s inquiry into Wales’s role in EU decision-making which is set to be debated in plenary on 4 June. It also provides details of the European and international activities of Assembly Members, including the two representatives on the Committee of the Regions – Mick Antoniw AM and Rhodri Glyn Thomas -as well as details of international VIP visitors to the Senedd, for example the Greek Ambassador to the UK who will meet the Presiding Office Dame Rosemary Butler AM and Committee Chairs on 15 May to discuss the Greek Presidency of the EU. Following the elections we will be providing regular updates via the Research Service In Brief blog on the most relevant developments at EU level of interest to the Assembly and Wales. You can also follow our Twitter feed which we update daily with news from the Assembly as well as re-tweeting a wide range of EU tweets: @SeneddEurope Europe Matters, Issue 29 blog-eng
